OK. At first I thought "this doesn't sound much different from the Middle ages". But I think I am beginning to get it. The melodies are much more "modern" and a bit sweeter. Helped the play some Machaut vs Dufay back to back.
so we are singing the Faure requiem in a couple of weeks. today during rehearsal our conductor started rattling off on how this particular requiem is rooted in the renaissance and all that stuff. the conductor is always quick to point out that Faure is considered one of the greatest melody writers ever (to your point), and within his requiem there are some truly amazing little melodies.
moral of this story: tonight i'm going to listen to our chosen music and compare some of the themes I hear to the Faure score I've been working off of for the last five weeks. updates to follow...
Adams for me tonight. A little Naive and Sentimental music. In his autobiography, Adams talks about it being the closest thig he's ever written to Bruckner.
